Dedicated to the sustainable conservation of wildlife, habitat and building local livelihoods

Our holistic approach commits tourism, ranching and other enterprises to building local livelihoods and enhancing ecosystem integrity.

African savannah with elephant and rhinoceros

Borana is located on the northern slopes of Mt Kenya just North of the equator on the Laikipia Plateau, nestled between an arid landscape to the north and ancient indigenous forests to the south. This 28,000-acre protected area is home to both Black and White Rhino and a wide variety of other endangered species. Borana is a protected area management entity committed to the sustainable conservation and regeneration of wildlife, and rangelands and building local livelihoods.

In 2013, a founding population of 21 Black Rhino were introduced to Borana. Once they were settled and had established their territories, the fence between Borana and neighbouring Lewa Wildlife Conservancy was dropped forming one continuous landscape.

This ecosystem, known as the Lewa-Borana Landscape which includes the Ngare Ndare Forest, allows the wildlife to roam free over 90,000 acres of intact African wilderness.

This connected landscape hosts a thriving community of over 250 black and white rhino, with birthrates on occasion exceeding 9%, making this one of East Africa’s largest continuous rhino habitats. The high birth rates create an urgent need to expand habitat which is being explored through a proposal under the umbrella of the Kenya Rhino Range Expansion Project in partnerships with The Kenya Wildlife Service.

SUSTAINABILITY

Borana Conservancy is aiming to be carbon neutral. All tourism properties and our administrative centre have made substantial steps in this direction and have been converted to 95% solar energy. All of our water reticulation is pumped using solar energy and abstraction from water sources is managed and monitored carefully.

This is complemented by a creative recycling centre at the Borana HQ, allowing all properties to sort and recycle their waste, substantially reducing landfill.

Our commitment to sustainability is independently audited by the National Environment Agency along with The Long Run.
